Louise ZhangVernon Ah Kee

The NEAE Scaffold

Use this four-step structure for every question. Scale the depth to match the marks.

N
Step 1 — Name

Identify clearly

State the artist, artwork title, date, and medium upfront. Name the technique, theme, or concept the question targets. Don't bury your answer.

"Louise Zhang's Smother (2018), created using cast silicone and resin, explores themes of bodily identity and the grotesque."
E
Step 2 — Explain

Define and contextualise

What is the technique or theme trying to achieve? Connect it to the artist's broader practice and intentions.

"Zhang uses layered silicone to mimic the texture of skin and flesh. Its translucency unsettles the viewer, evoking vulnerability and the instability of the body."
A
Step 3 — Apply

Show it in a specific artwork

Describe how this is applied in a named artwork. Use visual evidence — colour, line, form, scale, texture, composition.

"In Smother, Zhang layers translucent pink and flesh-toned silicone into bulbous forms that spill beyond the frame."
E
Step 4 — Evaluate

Discuss the effect

What impact does this create on the viewer? How does it communicate the artist's intentions?

"Zhang's work challenges the viewer's relationship with the body — simultaneously repelling and fascinating."
